I can’t think of any sex toy update as anticipated as the Magic Wand Rechargeable. The original Magic Wand (a.k.a. the Hitachi) is a classic of the sex toy world, known for its legendary power to induce orgasms…even if you can’t be bothered to remove your pants. But with great power came a few significant drawbacks. The porous vinyl head, being tethered to an outlet, and the lack of a power setting below “jackhammer” meant that the Hitachi was not a regular in my toy rotation. Sure, I appreciated the fast, no undressing required orgasms 1 but most days, I prefer something with a tad more finesse.
The Magic Wand Rechargeable also marks the first time I have been excited to hear that a vibrator is offering new, less powerful settings. The MWR has four power settings, with the higher two roughly corresponding to the original power levels. The two new settings are my jam. They’re rumbly, deep vibrations but not completely overwhelming. I never applied the original Magic Wand directly to my vulva because it was just too intense, but I don’t have that problem with the MWR. And if I happen to be craving a quickie orgasm or three, I can always crank it up.
The Magic Wand Rechargeable has three buttons in place of a switch. The top button powers it on or off. The middle button scrolls through the four power settings, and the bottom one scrolls through the vibration patterns. The patterns are set at the highest power level and their intensity can’t be adjusted.
As its name suggests, the beauty of the MWR is freedom from the cord. I tested the Magic Wand Rechargeable outside on my deck to get a full appreciation of its uncorded glory. The lack of cord is handy in hotel rooms, where outlets tend to be scarce and/or inconveniently located. It also means there’s no need to worry about getting tangled up when playing with a partner.
The battery on the Magic Wand Rechargeable lasts a long time… about three hours on a single charge. Be warned though, that it has a somewhat irritating safety feature. To prevent overheating, the MWR will automatically shut off after 20 minutes of continuous use. Fortunately, it can be restarted immediately after that. If you’re using the MWR for an extended period, you may want to briefly shut it off now and then to avoid being unpleasantly surprised. Should you happen to run the battery down before you’re ready to stop, the MWR is able to be used in “plug and play” mode. Just plug the charger in, and you can use it the old fashioned way.
While the MWR is overall slightly larger than the original, the diameter of the head is pretty much the same. I tried my all my attachments2 with it, and everything fit just fine. In general, they’re more enjoyable on the new lower settings too. The most noticeable improvement was the Flutter, which no longer feels like it should be called the Clit Slapper. What has changed about the head is that it’s now made of silicone. Beautiful, body safe, velvety, smooth, non-porous silicone. It looks better, feels better and is better for you.
If I had three wishes, there are a few features I’d add to the MWR. First, I’d wish for more control. Having the scroll through adjustable strength on the vibration patterns can be annoying, I wish I could easily step it back a level. I’d also love the ability to adjust the power level for the patterns. The default is the highest intensity, and that’s too much for me. Second, I’d make the MWR splashproof for easier cleaning. Being able to run water over the head would be excellent. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I would add a travel lock. Why is this so critical, you ask? Let me tell you a story…
Once upon a time, there was a tired business traveler stumbling into her hotel after a very loooooooooooong day. She was exhausted and stressed and just wanted to get to her room and relax. While she was giving the receptionist her credit card and ID, her Pleasure Purse toppled from its resting place atop her suitcase. Loud buzzing ensued. And it did not stop. The receptionist raised her eyebrows. People around the hotel lobby stared. Yet the exhausted business traveler gave no fucks. She steadfastly ignored her rumbling baggage, obtained her room key, and thanked all the dildo deities that no one got in the elevator with her.
So if you travel with the MWR, I recommend you pack it carefully. Or have a good sense of humor. I have to admit that once I got to my room, ate some food and decompressed, I found the whole thing pretty funny. The orgasms from the MWR totally made up for any embarrassment it caused.
Overall, I think the Magic Wand Rechargeable successfully improves on the classic Magic Wand. It sees a lot more use than my Hitachi did, and in my opinion the new features definitely justify the higher price tag.
