Review: The Butters Lube

I know.  You’re probably not all that excited to see a lube review pop up.  I mean, lube is important and amazing but it’s not as interesting as shiny, colorful, rumbly sex toys, is it?  Well, I happen to think this particular lube is pretty special, so please allow me to introduce you to The Butters.

The Butters is an a vegan, hypoallergenic lubricant created by Jerome Stuart Nichols.  It’s made from the following all-natural ingredients, whipped together for a light, creamy texture:

Pure organic aloe vera fillet gel, raw grade a golden ghanaian shea butter, pure coconut oil, pure extra virgin olive oil, pure grapeseed oil, pure palm kernel oil, pure soy lipid emulsion, apple cider vinegar, arrowroot gel

My sensitive skin is very happy with these ingredients, though they may not work for everyone.  Aloe can cause sensitivity/allergy issues in a small but significant number of people.  You may want to patch test The Butters on a small area of your skin before slathering it all over your genitals, just in case.  One other word of caution (plainly noted on the label): Because this lube contains oils, it will break down latex or polyisoprene condoms/barriers.  You’ll need to go with polyurethane or nitrile instead.

The Butters has no added fragrances.  It smells very faintly woody/herbal as a result of the plant-based ingredients.  I couldn’t detect any scent from the vinegar, probably because it’s the next to last ingredient and only a small amount is used.  It has a very neutral taste, so it’s oral sex compatible too.  I’ve had my jar for several months, and there has been no separation or change in texture over time.

Butters Fingers

Texture is what I absolutely love about The Butters.  It’s thick enough to stay where I put it with no dripping or running, and has a slickness that lasts.  It is the very definition of “a little goes a long way”, but doesn’t feel greasy or heavy.  This stuff is a godsend with toys made of lube-hogging matte silicone (Fun Factory products being a prime example).  It’s also ideal for hand jobs that are slippery without being sloppy.  I love the way it feels in use, and how soft my skin feels afterward.

I adore The Butters as a moisturizer as well, particularly after shaving/waxing.  I used to use straight coconut oil, which was soothing even though I didn’t care for the greasy feel.  With The Butters, I get the same softness without the oil slick.  The website lists a number of other potential uses including massage, makeup removal and shaving lubricant.  I’ve tested The Butters in those capacities as well, and it’s a solid performer across the board.

If you’re on the fence about giving The Butters a try, consider the fact that it’s extremely affordable.  You can grab a two ounce tub for $3.  An eight ounce jar will cost you only $10.  And you’re supporting a small (for now) business.  The Butters also passes my most important standard of judging a lube: As I approach the end of my sample jar, I have ordered more.  There’s just so much to love about this well-made and versatile product.
